Salvador

Igreja de Nosso Senhor do Bonfim

Small church located in a neighborhood to the north, is one of the most popular pilgrimage sites in all of Brazil. The colorful votive ribbons or fitas of Bonfim are an easily recognizable item throughout Brazil and even beyond. Children outside the church will (for a small fee) tie them around your wrist and tell you to make a wish for each one. If the ribbon wears off naturally, the wish will come true; if you cut it off before then, it won't. You can get to Bonfim by city bus in about fifteen minutes.

Igreja de Nosso Senhor do Bonfim Bonfim2.jpg

Pelourihno

Pelourinho is the Colonial historic district of Salvador, a UNESCO World Heritage site, located in the Cidade Alto. There are several historic churches, many restaurants, bars and souvenir shops, a number of museums, and venues for music and theatre. One of the best times to party with the locals is at the Tuesday night bencao.

MV -- "They Don't Care About Us" 就是在此拍攝的

Praça da Sé

Praça da Sé

Terreiro de Jesus

Terreiro de Jesus is a beautiful square in Salvador da Bahia, and is a good place to start a sightseeing-tour of the old city. The square is surrounded by the 17th century Catedral Basílica, the neoclassical Antiga Faculdade de Medicina (which now houses the Afro-Brazilian Museum) and a couple of smaller old churches (Igreja São Pedro dos Clerigos and Igreja de Ordem Terceiro de São Domingos de Gusmão). At the center of the square, there is a large iron fountain of French origin from 1855. The fountain represents Ceres - the goddess of the agriculture. It is also here capoeira demonstrations take place throughout the day (remember to give tip if you take pictures…).

Igreja de São Francisco

One of the most spectacular churches in the world, this famous church is richly adorned inside with gold, silver and precious stones and has ceiling art that has been compared to that of the Sistine Chapel.

Catedral Basilica

This is a magnificent church andwas constructed in the seventeenth century, with gold, marble, wood and ivory, mixing baroque and rococo styles. The design is simply spectacular! In this church the visitor can usually appreciate concerts, such as Bahia’s Symphonic Orchestra presentations

The entrance fee into the church is R$ 2 and the inside is purely breathtaking. All carvings that one can admire were done by African slaves. And seeing the history those who built this church were not allowed inside. Many various altars can be found in either side of the church and detailed beautiful paintings can be seen on the ceiling.

Igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Domingos

Igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Domingos

Igreja de São Pedro dos Clérigos

Igreja de São Pedro dos Clérigos is a great example of Colonial Recife architecture. Constructed in the 18th century, it has remained an historical and cultural artifact of the city. It has a stunning Baroque façade, an exquisitely carved door, splendid wooden altars and a beautifully painted ceiling. After a restoration the church acquired some Neoclassical elements.

Igreja de São Pedro dos Clérigos

Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos

Built by and for slaves between 1704 and 1796 to honour Our Lady of the Rosary of the Blacks, this church didn't receive due attention outside the local Afro-Brazilian community until long after it was built. The church uses a mixture of themes, both African and Catholic. The blue and white facade is a mixture of baroque and rococo architecture with oriental-looking towers. After extensive renovation, it is worth a look at the side altars to see statues of the Catholic church's few black saints. One of the highlights of this church is the painting of the Passion with a black Chirst. African rhythms pervade the service. It is open Mon-Fri 9:30am-6pm, Sat 9:30am-5pm, Sun 10am-noon

Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos

Palácio Rio Branco

Palácio Rio Branco

Elevador Lacerda

This is the easiest way to get from the lower town to the upper town. The Elevador Lacerda runs 24 hours, four elevators climb the 60 meters in less then a minute. Originally built in 1872 the old elevator ran on steam until its 1930 restoration. The rate to go up in the elevator is R$ 0.05 hence make sure you have coins! Bahians joke that the elevator is the only way to "go up" in life :-)

Elevador Lacerda

Mercado Modelo

The Mercado Modelo is a great place to buy souvenirs, often at prices cheaper than in Pelourinhoor on the beach.

Mercado Modelo

Escola Olodum

Escola Olodum

Solar do Unhão

seaside, deck, sun-set

Farol da Barra

Farol da Barra (Barra Lighthouse) is located in the Barra neighbourhood and is one of the remarkable landmarks of Salvador da Bahia. The lighthouse stands on the site of an old colonial fort erected in 1534. Forte de Santo Antônio da Barra was the first and most important Portuguese fortress to protect Salvador da Bahia against attacks from the English, Dutch or Spanish.Inside Farol da Barra you’ll find a small museum with exhibitions of maps, charts, navigational instruments and findings from ship wrecks from the bay outside Salvador da Bahia. There is a very beautiful view of the bay - and especially at sunset it is a very popular place to visit. The lighthouse is the centre of activities during the Carnival

Praia do Forte & Projeto Tamar (Sea Turtle Project)

Praia do Forte

Praia do Forte

Acaraje

Acarajé is a dish made from peeled black-eyed peas formed into a ball and then deep-fried in dendê (palm oil). It is served split in half and then stuffed with vatapá and caruru – spicy pastes made from shrimp, ground cashew nuts, palm oil and other ingredients.

Moqueca

Moqueca is a traditional Brazilian seafood stew. Brazilians have been making Moquecas for 300 years. It basically consists of fish, onions, garlic, tomatoes, cilantro, and additional ingredients. It is cooked slowly, with no water added.

Moqueca

Cocada

Originating from Angola, Cocada amarela is a heavy dessert made principally from eggs and coconut and has a distinctive yellow colour due to the quantity of eggs it contains.

Cocada

Cocada
